Renato Calabria, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Renato Calabria, MD, FACSRenowned Surgeon’s Techniques Take Hollywood by Storm

By Trudie Mitschang

Dr. Renato Calabria is known as an innovator within his field. The sought-after plastic surgeon has offices in Beverly Hills, Rancho Mirage, and Rome, Italy, and is the architect of the revolutionary “One-Stitch Face Lift” that has become the procedure of choice for the A-list Hollywood crowd. His roster of international clientele includes celebrities and media personalities whose features are their fortunes — people who would not trust their most precious assets to anyone but Dr. Calabria.

In addition to skill and artistry, the doctor exhibits a warm bedside manner, humor and welcoming personality. Quite simply, he knows how to make prospective patients feel comfortable.

INNOVATOR OF THE LATEST HOLLYWOOD QUICK-FIX

In response to the trend toward minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Calabria developed a remarkable procedure called the “One- Stitch Face Lift.” The procedure has been extremely popular with Hollywood celebrities, who often request it right before doing a film to freshen their features without unwanted downtime.

“The idea behind this procedure was prompted by an old Hollywood trick in which actresses used tape to pull slackened skin upward, taking great pains to hide the tape with hair or wigs,” says Dr. Calabria. “What I did was take the concept and develop a procedure that would provide similar results more permanently.”

The unique feature of the “One-Stitch Face Lift” is that it uses your own loose skin at the level of the sideburn, which has been de-epithelialized, tunneled, and anchored through another small incision in the temporal area. Dr. Calabria says, “It’s a sort of a natural lift, without the insertion of any external threads that could possible be palpable, get infected, or just give in. If you place your fingers on your cheeks and pull up, you can get an idea of what the effect will be.”

Dr. Calabria says that this is a great procedure for patients concerned about downtime, which is why the Hollywood elite have made it so popular. Considered a true lunchtime lift, it is performed under local anesthesia with no sedation — so you can drive yourself there and back with no problem.

“Many patients go back to work the next day,” says Dr. Calabria. “Swelling is minimal, and there is no bruising. The only area that shows any sign of surgery is the sideburn; and in a week or two, it will be almost imperceptible.” Adding that the “One- Stitch Face Lift” is proving to produce a longer-lasting result than the much-touted thread lift, Dr. Calabria says in the end it all comes down to technique.

“The technique is essential to creating a positive result,” says the doctor. “And because this procedure uses the patient’s own skin to anchor the lift and hold the tissue in place, the longevity of the result is vastly superior and results are more natural.”

If you’ve considered facial rejuvenation but felt unready for a full face lift, the One-Stitch Face Lift could be right for you. In a matter of days, you can be red-carpet ready and prepared for your closeup!

THE VERTICAL FACE LIFT

Another technique Dr. Calabria has made headlines with is the “Vertical Face Lift.” Dr. Calabria explains that as one ages, gravity causes the facial tissues to droop. Traditional face-lift surgery attempts to correct the problem by pulling in an unnatural, lateral direction, producing the so-called “wind-tunnel look.”

“This technique is considerably less invasive, safer, and results in a more natural look by reshaping the deeper facial tissues in a vertical vector, virtually eliminating any visible scars,” says Dr. Calabria. “It only makes sense that if gravity is working to pull features down, the lift technique should do the opposite by pulling features up. The traditional method pulled the features back, which actually flattens the face and gives an unnatural ‘tight’ appearance.” The procedure is done through two tiny, inconspicuous incisions in the hairline and inside the mouth. The sutures are then carefully placed to suspend, reposition, and secure the facial tissues in a vertical, more youthful position. There is less bruising, and recovery time is reduced. This technique is also ideal for the patient with a previous face lift who has an unnatural, pulled-back look or the younger patient who does not want a traditional face lift or the visible scars it leaves on the face.

Always on the forefront of his profession, Dr. Calabria is known for taking a conservative approach to cosmetic care. A true artist who always begins working with a patient with the end in mind, Dr. Calabria has been known to say no to patients who want procedures that are, in his opinion, not in their best interests. “I always say that a surgeon who can’t say no either has too big of a mortgage or too many ex-wives!” he jokes.

As a leading expert in his field, Dr. Calabria has been featured on shows such as Extra, Inside Edition, KTLA News, ABC News, CBS News and NBC News, The Insider, The Secret Life of Women, and RAI Uno Mattina. He has also been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Us Magazine, People Magazine, In Touch Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Glamour, Men’s Journal, L.A. Confidential, Brentwood Magazine, Beverly Hills Times, More Magazine, National Enquirer, Cosmetic Surgery Magazine, LAFM, Westlake Magazine, Salute, INSIEME Together, BUNTE, Gente, La Repubblica, and L’ espresso.

In addition, Dr. Calabria has authored and co-authored numerous publications and is frequently called upon to lecture nationally and internationally.
