Desert Spine and Neurosurgical Institute
Forward-reaching approaches to spine and brain disorders
By John Carrrigan

Once you meet the physicians at Desert Spine and Neurosurgical Institute (DSNI), specialists in brain and spinal disorders, you can’t help but be impressed by their knowledge, their skill and, most importantly, their dedication to developing state-of-the-art, cutting-edge approaches to the treatment and care of each individual patient. The institute was founded in 2002 to offer residents of the desert the first-class, renowned care that can be found in only a few medical centers around the world. Patient care has always been the no. 1 priority at DSNI.

Right from the start, the doctors here have employed the latest technology, engaged in breakthrough research, and devoted themselves to sharing their knowledge with physicians in other fields, as well as with the community. DSNI is engaged in two exciting research projects — one involving the latest joint-replacement technologies and a second that visualizes and localizes pain in the spine — that will have far-reaching significance.

Two important research studies
DSNI is one of only 20 centers in the United States that has been invited to participate in the FDA lumbar joint-replacement study. Implants will be inserted into the lumbar spine to alleviate pain and improve mobility as an alternative to spinal fusion surgery.

The second study is an imaging study to evaluate pain in the spine. As part of Eisenhower Medical Center, DSNI is one of only a few facilities that have access to state-of-the-art imaging techniques. And it is the only group that is utilizing the latest imaging technologies to visualize and localize spinal pain.

A new state-of-the-art facility
DSNI is in the process of expanding into new, larger quarters in Rancho Mirage. This facility will truly be a state-of-the-art neuroscience center. According to Dr. Shahin Etebar, M.D., a specialist in spinal surgery and a partner in DSNI, “We are very excited about this move, because this new facility will have access to everything needed to treat brain, spinal, and neurological disorders.

It is, in the best sense of the word, a multispecialty center housing neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, pain management, and physical therapy. Here, patients will receive all the technologically advanced services and hands-on care and attention they deserve.” This new facility is the first neuroscience center DSNI plans to open in collaboration with Eisenhower Medical Center.

Creating multidisciplinary teams to solve complex disorders DSNI is committed to excellence, and each of the principal physicians is a specialist in his field. Dr. Farhad M. Limonadi is a specialist in complex brain tumors and diseases of the brain and also has an active practice in minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Shahin Etebar and Dr. Alfred C. Shen are both specialists in minimally invasive and complex spinal surgery. And Dr. Ali Tahmouresie, a former chairman of the department of surgery at Eisenhower Medical Center, now handles nonsurgical cases. These physicians have created multi-disciplinary teams for the treatment of complex brain and spinal disorders. A team including a neuro-interventionalist, neuro-otologist, and a neurosurgeon, for example, would attend to a patient with a brain tumor, utilizing state-of-the-art technologies. In the case of spinal injuries, the team might include a surgeon, a neurologist, a pain management specialist, and a radiologist — all experts in their subspecialties and all bringing their knowledge and technological expertise to the treatment and care of an individual patient.

The recognition they deserve
DSNI’s forward-reaching approach to the care of brain and spinal injuries has not gone unnoticed. DSNI physicians have been recognized by Eisenhower Medical Center for excellence, as well as for their untiring efforts in improving medical outcomes at the hospital. Farhad M. Limonadi, M.D., was also named Physician of the Year by Eisenhower Medical Center in 2007. In addition, three of the institute’s physicians — Dr. Limonadi, Dr. Etebar, and Dr. Shen — have all been named Surgeons of the Year by the International Consumers Research Council. One reason for these accolades might be the willingness of DSNI physicians to share their knowledge with their peers and to educate the public on the latest treatments and technologies. To that end, they sponsor the
Neuroscience Grand Rounds, as well as the Journal Club, on a monthly basis for other physicians at Eisenhower Medical Center. And they sponsor informative lecture series on the latest advances in brain and spinal disorders for the general public throughout the year.
