Desert Regional Medical Center - Tenet Health System Center of Excelence in Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, you may have considered weight loss surgery. If so, you know that seeking a surgical center with experience, skill and credentials is of utmost importance to your safety and long-term success. Led by fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon Bobbie Bhasker-Rao, M.D., and with more than 500 successful surgeries to its credit, Desert Regional Medical Center is proud to have been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®. The ASMBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
“Morbid obesity is closely correlated with a number of serious conditions that severely undermine the health of overweight patients, including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes,” said Karolee Sowle, Chief Executive Officer of Desert Regional Medical Center. “Bariatric surgery, when performed correctly, can help obese patients manage these conditions.” Of course, Desert Regional Medical Center’s bariatric program is about much more than surgery. It’s about a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The Center’s multidisciplinary professional team is dedicated to providing direction, education and support to help you make the right choices for a lifetime, including:
• Support groups • One-on-one counseling • Exercise guidance • Nutritional education • Meal planning
The truth is, weight loss surgery, although it has its risks, can change your life. And while you may expect it to change how you feel about yourself and how others see you, what you may not expect is the impact it may have on your health.

Comprehensive Cancer Center Celebrating 20 years of caring and innovation Twenty years ago, Desert Regional Medical Center had a vision for a multi-disciplinary cancer center that would bring together a variety of specialists, technologies and treatments – all under one roof. Today, thanks to that innovative spirit, thousands of cancer patients are also celebrating their own anniversaries. What began as a 5,000 square foot facility, today is a four-story, 60,000 square foot center with over 15 specialty programs including Medical, Radiation and Surgical Oncology; Gastrointestinal Malignancies; Gynecologic Oncology, Thoracic Oncology, and Neuro-oncology. The center also features a Comprehensive Breast Center; a full-time Clinical Research program, a Pharmacy and Laboratory services. The Psychosocial Services department includes a licensed psychologist, clinical social workers and registered dietitians to help patients through the emotional and practical aspects of their cancer journey.
“We have a team of highly specialized medical professionals who strive to treat the most individual needs of our patients – medically and emotionally,” says Elber Camacho, M.D., Medical Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center. “We hold regular meetings to discuss how each of our specialized recommendations would help support the best outcomes for our patients. That’s what makes us different.”
Teresa Whipple, Vice President and Executive Director, notes the Comprehensive Cancer Center debuted several technological advancements in the region including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. “This technology helps the physician deliver radiation more precisely to the tumor to help protect surrounding healthy tissue,” she said. Additionally, the surgical oncologists at the Comprehensive Cancer Center were among the first locally to perform sentinel node biopsy, which is a minimally invasive surgery that can help determine the extent or stage of cancer.
What’s in the future? “Someday cancer may be cured,” says Whipple. “Meanwhile we plan to continue to emphasize early detection, aggressive treatment, advanced technology, and expand our national research trials. We want to give our patients everything we can to help them through.” For more information, call (760) 416-4800 or visit www.desertccc.com More Information - Websites, Maps and Driving Directions
