Upon entering the warmly decorated and friendly interior of Morgan Stanley, one can’t help but get an immediate feeling of reassurance and security from the professional climate. Morgan Stanley was founded in the mid-1930s by several partners of J.P. Morgan. The firm had been compelled by the passage of the Glass-Steagall Act to divest its securities division. At that time, Morgan Stanley was strictly an investment banking and corporate finance business. It wasn’t until the early 1970s that securities trading and research were established. At that time global strategist Barton Biggs was hired to head the research effort. He assembled a winning research department that placed seventh in the 1974 annual Institutional Investor All-America Research Team. Morgan Stanley’s overseas research effort began in the late 1980s — more than 50 years after the passage of Glass-Steagall. Biggs’ passion for overseas investing was sparked when the World Bank’s International Finance Corp. asked the firm to launch two of the first emerging markets funds. In the 1990s Morgan Stanley continued to build its global research network, adding more analysts, strategists and economists. The two firms merged in 1997, forming a global investment powerhouse. Although they brought different strengths to the partnership, they share one very important tenet — the needs of the investor must always come first.
