Attractions - The Famous Tramway

The Tramway ascends to the top of Mt. San Jacinto 8,500 feet above the valley.

One of the biggest tourist attractions in the Coachella Valley is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. It’s an impressive site with the world’s largest rotating tram cars, not to mention the 2.5-mile trip from Valley Station to Mountain Station that gains almost 6,000 feet elevation.

But many first-time visitors have the strange sensation that they’ve seen the Tram before. But how is that possible since this is their first visit?

Simple. They’ve seen it on television or at the movies.

The Tram made its movie debut in 1966 in the movie Cool Ones, starring Roddy McDowall that featured a musical dance number on the Tram itself. Since then, the Tram has appeared in two dozen movies and television shows, ranging from Matt Helm to Columbo to General Hospital to Extreme Home Makovers.

Although the Tram is a movie star it its own right, visitors may well spy other celebrities hobnobbing with the Tram as well. Past visitors have included Bing Crosby, Gene Autry, Red Skelton, Larry Hagman, Princess Grace and family, President Ronald Reagan, Dinah Shore, Ned Beatty, Donald O’Connor, Greg Evigan, Billy Barty, Huell Howser, Taylor Negron, Sidney Sheldon, and Fred “The Hammer” Williamson.
