Albert Frey Gas Designed Tramway Gas Station

Enjoy what thousands of experts and enthusiasts come to see each year: a hotbed of mid-century modernism. The style characterized by flat and elongated roofs, glass walls, and right angles is about experimentation.

The desert has become a virtual museum of modern buildings by famed architects such as John Lautner, Albert Frey, William Cody, Donald Wexler, and E. Stewart Williams. Examples include the turtle-shell-roofed Bob Hope house, the Tramway gas station (now the Palm Springs Visitor’s Center), the Bank of America building in downtown Palm Springs, and Palm Springs’ City Hall.

R.M. Schindler created the first modern building in the desert in 1922— a cabin at the east end. The Oasis Hotel, a modern gem created by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright, opened only a year later.

Other mid-century wonders to see include the Elvis Presley Honeymoon Hideaway created by Don Saxon Palmer and William Krisel; and the gas station at 2796 N. Palm Canyon Drive, designed by Cody in 1964 and still in operation.

Over the years, several local organizations formed to celebrate and preserve these structures. Turn to the experts to plan your own modernism tour of the valley. For a guided tour, contact Palm Springs Modern Tours.
